Athens Street Food & Market
Eat your way through central Athens, from the souvlaki grills of Monastiraki and a fairy-tale Psyrri cafe to the roaring meat-and-fish halls of the Varvakios central market, a beloved old spice-and-deli house on Evripidou Street, and a loukoumades shop frying honey doughnuts since 1922.
- Monastiraki Square — Start in Monastiraki, the buzzing square where Athens comes to snack. The lanes running off it are lined with grills sending up the smell of charcoal, oregano and roasting meat from morning to midnight.
- Bairaktaris — Bairaktaris has grilled on Monastiraki Square since 1879, its walls hung with barrels and old photos. Here you meet the Athenian icons: souvlaki, skewered grilled meat, and gyros, shaved from a vertical spit and wrapped in pita with tomato, onion and tzatziki.
- Little Kook — Duck into Psyrri to find Little Kook, an outrageously decorated fairy-tale cafe whose street overflows with giant props that change with the seasons — carousels, spiders, marionettes. It is famous less for a single dish than for towering, over-the-top desserts.
