Café Stathé — Welcome to the bar hunt. Café Stathé sits on Vredenburg, the busy square on the western edge of the binnenstad — a five-minute walk from Centraal. A reliable, no-airs Utrecht café for a first round before the walking starts in earnest.
Stadskasteel Oudaen — One of the oldest standing buildings on the Oudegracht: a fortified medieval city castle built around 1280 by a wealthy Utrecht family. Today it's a brasserie that brews its own beer in-house, reviving an old tradition — Utrecht had over thirty breweries in the 1500s.

Dom Tower — You're standing under the Netherlands' tallest church tower. Built between 1321 and 1382, it once was attached to the cathedral — until a tornado tore the nave apart in 1674.
Domplein — The lighter stones in the square trace the footprint of the cathedral nave that was destroyed by a freak tornado in 1674. Beneath your feet lies the Roman fort Trajectum, founded around 50 CE — Utrecht's oldest layer.
Paushuize — Built in 1517 for Adriaan Florensz Boeyens, who became Pope Adrianus VI in 1522. He never returned to Utrecht and died after just twenty months — but his house, decorated with papal symbols, still stands.

Twijnstraat — Twijnstraat — once the medieval lane of yarn-spinners (twijnen = to twist thread) — is now Utrecht's foodie spine. Family-run cheesemongers, butchers, fishmongers, bakeries and delis, all stacked into one narrow street. Take your time on this one.
Kaaswinkel — cheese shop — Dutch cheese is taken seriously here. Aged Gouda — boerenkaas, oude kaas, extra belegen — comes in wheels of every size, and most kaaswinkels will let you sample a sliver before you buy. Ask for 'oud' if you like it sharp and crystalline.
Banketbakkerij — Time for sugar. Pop into any banketbakkerij on Twijnstraat and pick your weapon: tompoes (vanilla custard between flaky pastry — impossible to eat tidily), appelflap (apple turnover), gevulde koek (almond-paste cookie), or a fat slice of ontbijtkoek (spiced breakfast cake).

Utrecht: Off the Beaten Track

This hunt threads through Utrecht's hidden corners — a UFO on a roof, a cloister garden behind the Dom, a 17th-century almshouse, the bastion that became Holland's first weather observatory, and the boulevard built for a forgotten lawn-game. About 3 km, eight stops, lots of stories most tourists never hear.

De Inktpot — and its UFO — Look up. The largest red-brick building in the Netherlands — 22 million bricks — was finished in 1921 as the headquarters of Dutch Railways. Locals nicknamed it 'De Inktpot' (the inkwell) for its shape. In 2000, artist Giny Vos plonked a glowing UFO sculpture on its roof. It's been there ever since, blinking red at night.
Pandhof of the Dom — You've walked past the Dom a thousand times. But have you been *behind* it? Through a small archway is the Pandhof — a 15th-century cloister garden with Gothic arcades, where the cathedral chapter once grew medicinal herbs. It's rarely crowded, even at peak tourist hour. A small miracle in the middle of town.
Janskerk on Janskerkhof — Older than the Dom. Consecrated by Bishop Bernold around 1050, as part of a deliberate plan: four 'kerkenkruis' (church-cross) churches positioned around the city in a geographical cross pattern, marking Utrecht as a holy capital. Two of the four still stand today — the Janskerk and the Pieterskerk; the Mariakerk was demolished in 1844 and the Paulusabdij was lost long before. The Romanesque tympanum above the door is one of the oldest carvings in Utrecht.
