Sydney Food Walk
Eat your way from the harbour's edge into the buzz of Chinatown. Start with the freshest seafood in the southern hemisphere, then dive into the yum cha, roti and Thai kitchens of Haymarket before finishing in a lantern-lit hawker laneway. Come with an empty stomach.
- Sydney Fish Market — Start at the Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont, the largest working fish market in the southern hemisphere. Trawlers unload here before dawn and it sells everything from Sydney rock oysters to the odd-looking Balmain and Moreton Bay 'bugs' — flat, sweet local shellfish.
- Dixon Street — Walk to Dixon Street, the pedestrian spine of Sydney's Chinatown, framed at each end by ornamental ceremonial gates. On weekends its restaurants overflow for a Cantonese tradition of small steamed and fried dishes brought around the room on trolleys.
- Mamak — Join the queue at Mamak, a Malaysian favourite where cooks work a hot griddle in the window, slapping and spinning discs of dough into a flaky, crisp flatbread served with curry dipping sauces. It's the kind of place worth lining up for.
